Hi Piers. your reviews are excellent, and what a great focus/theme for the site. I work with a female artist inspired by PJ Harvey and Patti Smith who I'd love to send for your consideration. Feel free to email me if interested in a download of her album. Thanks for your time and keep up the good work on the blog.

You've introduced me to yet another interesting torch singer--thank you for the informative post.

We so appreciate being included in your blogroll! I would like to let you know that we have a new, improved, and updated blog, which has a different URL from the one you're using for us in your blogroll. The new one is: http://mcelrathcabaret.com You'll know you've reached the new page because the template is in light blue and dark blue, and you'll see we've added several new features in the sidebar.

I'd also like to invite you to participate in our Cabaret Soiree Link Party. Every Monday those with cabaret blogs may link to one of their blog posts, and then visitors to our blog will also have the ability to click on your link and will be taken to your blog. Hopefully this will lead to new readers for all of our blogs! I have a blog post up today that outlines all the details. Hope to see you there!

Hi Piers

Thanks for the reviews - especially of Mary Hopkin's 'Spirit', She's been one of my favourite singers for years

I'd like to suggest Marketa Irglova. Formerly with the group The Swell Season, as a singer and pianist, she has now put out a solo album 'Anar'. I've been a fan of the Swell Season and her for a few years.

Some live performances from YouTube
'The Hill', which featured in the film 'Once'.

Her album is available for a while streamed on Paste Magazine http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/av/2011/10/album-stream-marketa-irglova---anar.html

Thanks very much for the compliment. Must admit I haven't given Charlotte Church a lot of thought in this area, but you could have a point. I need to raid Youtube to remind myself about that performance, and track down a copy of her album - I'll report back!

Just discovered your brilliant blog and I'm scrolling through the archives -- I'm belatedly (and randomly!) curious what you thought of Charlotte's performance of her ballad "The Actors" (also performed on OtR)? She seems to fare far better with original material that she can truly connect with. :) In fact, I think her latest album "Back to Scratch" has some lovely songs on it that fall under the category of torch singing. Sure, she misses the mark a few times with throwaway pop cute-ness, but I think she is on the right track to maturing as an artist.

Thanks! I think "Anachie Gordon" was beautiful and helped to establish Mary Black as a force to be reckoned with on the narrative/folk terrain. But for me, listening to and contrasting her interpretations across the years, her voice and technique have developed much more texture. She might have lost some of that earlier crystalline purity but there is greater depth and experience, which she uses with such understated skill. At the risk of sounding like a broken record myself, I think she's another singer (like Judie Tzuke)who is continuing to blossom in maturity and deserves a much higher profile beyond her established fan base.
