I’d like to suggest Marketa Irglova. Formerly with the group The Swell Season, as a singer and pianist, she has now put out a solo album ‘Anar’. I’ve been a fan of the Swell Season and her for a few years.

She seems to fare far better with original material that she can truly connect with. :) In fact, I think her latest album “Back to Scratch” has some lovely songs on it that fall under the category of torch singing. Sure, she misses the mark a few times with throwaway pop cute-ness, but I think she is on the right track to maturing as an artist.

I think “Anachie Gordon” was beautiful and helped to establish Mary Black as a force to be reckoned with on the narrative/folk terrain. But for me, listening to and contrasting her interpretations across the years, her voice and technique have developed much more texture. She might have lost some of that earlier crystalline purity but there is greater depth and experience, which she uses with such understated skill. At the risk of sounding like a broken record myself, I think she’s another singer (like Judie Tzuke)who is continuing to blossom in maturity and deserves a much higher profile beyond her established fan base.
